People's natural consciousness is sticky because they have not trodden the steps to enlightenment. they have stuck fast to various things for a long time. Even as they partake of the hidden essence, they cannot use it as medicine. Even as they hear words beyond conceptions, they cannot believe completely.
This is why Gautama spent forty-nine days in silent contemplation under the tree where he was enlightened. Wisdom is obscure, difficult to explain; there is nothing to which i may be likened. (taken from "The Five Houses of Zen").
